Valentines Day is coming and I can’t wait. We get to celebrate our love for those closest to us. Everything from cards to Wine is used to gift our love. I always bought my mother-in-law and my husband the biggest cards in the store when my son was growing up. They sat around and collected dust for years, but they always meant a lot. My kids always made out too. It was as if it was a small birthday in the wrong month.
The History of Valentine’s Day
In some countries, it is customary for people to exchange cards or letters that express their love and affection for one another. In other parts of the world, people may exchange gifts such as flowers, chocolates, or other small tokens of appreciation.
Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may be marked from a priest martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Some say that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, maybe, the two saints were actually one person. Other legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love.
